“Every human has a true authentic self. Trauma is the disconnection from it and healing is the reconnection to it .”

— Dr. Gabor Maté

My Approach & Services

  • Trauma overwhelms one’s ability to cope and can lead to a lasting rupture of the mind-body connection. A trauma-informed approach supports you to understand and process the impact of life-altering experiences, while also helping you to develop safe ways of managing painful emotions in the present.

Trauma-informed therapy emphasizes the importance of a therapeutic environment based on safety, trust, and respect. Questions in therapy arise from a genuine place of compassion and curiosity and encourage you to recognize your own strength, resiliency, and inner resources. The work is collaborative and consistently offers choice and control, allowing you to cultivate a sense of agency in your own life as well as hope for the present and future.

  • Client-centered practice is an empowerment model. I act as an engaged and responsive facilitator by imparting useful information, but never exerting power or authority over your life. We work in partnership to identify your central concerns, build upon your existing strengths and supports, and gradually move you towards self-discovery, self-acceptance, and healing.

Client-centered therapy is not a one-size-fits-all approach, but rather I adapt the work according to your unique needs. I welcome and attune to all expressions of your inner self so that you feel fully seen and heard. Overtime, the connection we nurture together models healthy communication, openness, and vulnerability.

  • Human experiences do not occur in a vacuum, but within the social and global context of the person and their social location. Anti-oppressive therapy looks beyond the individual level and explores the ways that systems of power and oppression have shaped your mental health and well-being. I seek to create an affirming environment for you to tend to these multidimensional wounds and begin unlearning disempowering beliefs about yourself and/or others.

An anti-oppressive approach requires active work on behalf of the practitioner to challenge structural inequities in and outside of therapy. I work to dismantle inherent power dynamics within the therapeutic space, while also critically examining my own privilege and marginalization to avoid recreating or reinforcing harm.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that engages the brain’s natural healing process. When trauma occurs the body goes into survival mode, causing memory to be processed and stored incorrectly. As a result, traumatic memories can become stuck and later emerge as intense emotional, sensory, and body-based experiences.

During EMDR, I help guide you through eye movements, tones, or tapping to activate all parts of the brain and reintegrate a trauma memory network. This rewiring process allows painful feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations associated with the trauma to lose their charge. While EMDR does not rid the brain of the traumatic memory, it shifts how it is held in the mind and body. The trauma no longer holds the same power, allowing you to feel in control and firmly grounded in the here and now.

EMDR can be especially helpful for those seeking support for complex trauma and PTSD, as well as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and addiction. For more information on EMDR and AF-EMDR, please visit the EMDR International Association and The Parnell Institute.
